Assistant Director

The Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies at SDSU seeks an Assistant Director to start August 20, 2020. The Assistant Director will teach courses and assist the Director with the day­to-day administrative operations of the Center. The appointment is anticipated to be in the lecturer category, with administrative support effort at 40% per semester and teaching duties varying between two and four classes per academic year for a total appointment of 60%-80% per semester. The appointment is part-time, temporary, and subject to annual review, and will qualify the incumbent for health benefits.

The Assistant Director will teach classes in Brazilian Studies. Applicants should have a strong background in Brazilian Studies, prior teaching experience and demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary engagement. Ph.D. in relevant field required. Fluency in English and Portuguese required.

Administrative duties include: processing financial documents related to events, visiting scholars, student and faculty funding initiatives and the routine functioning of the Center; engaging in event planning, including booking travel, assisting domestic and foreign scholars with paperwork, working with Center staff to promote events; representing the Center at events, on campus, and in the wider community; working with the Director to design and implement curriculum related to Brazilian Studies; supervising student workers in the Center; promoting study abroad and internships with interested student constituencies; engaging in long term strategic planning with Director and Intercollegiate Advisory Board; developing and implementing new initiatives; community outreach as necessary.
